JAMES BOND POSTER BOOK pulled from Amazon (update)

Here's a wild bit of news. It appears that DK has pulled their new book James Bond: 50 Years of Movie Posters from Amazon. The listing now says the book in "under review." So what happened?

Well, Graham Rye, editor of OO7 Magazine, posted on the CBn forums that he sent an email to DK "containing 55 separate comments concerning the errors and text omissions in the book." Graham says they "now intend to reprint it in a corrected version."

I sent an email to DK several weeks back seeing if I could get a review copy of this book, but never heard back. I took the plunge and purchased it this week. While the book does indeed contain errors and omissions typical of official publications (no Tomorrow Never Dies U.S. advance one-sheet, the poster listed as the Never Say Never Again U.S. one-sheet is clearly not), it's still a very nicely put together book with some sensational concept artwork. Certainly it is a vast improvement over the last official poster book.

It baffles me why DK didn't run a proof by any one of several readily accessible James Bond experts and collectors who could have easily flagged these problems before they became, well, this BIG problem.

What does this mean for those of us who already purchased the book? That I would like to know.

Check out this thread at the CBn Forums where the book is being discussed. Also feel free to add any new info in the Comments below.

UPDATE: Looks like the book is again available for purchase on Amazon. No word from DK about what happened or whether there will be a corrected edition. Weird.

UPDATE 2: According to Graham Rye, the book was pulled because someone complained that the book was not what it purported to be in its Amazon listing. The customer who complained to Amazon believed the book was a portfolio of pull-out posters you could hang on the wall. So...no corrected edition, etc.

  1. What it means is they have a collectors item. DK must be kicking themselves to have so many errors that simply errata sheet won't suffice. The reprint costs will likely eat up the profits given the size and print quality of the book.

    1. Collectors item...that crossed my mind as well. But I'd rather have a corrected edition. It could be they will do nothing after their "review". I expect the review looks into whether any of the errors causes them any legal problems. The only thing I could think of woud be the NSNA poster. Maybe PSO owns that artwork. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

  2. Recieved mine last week and spotted a couple of errors. Really strange this. Do I return my copy ?

    1. If they do release a corrected edition you might be able to exchange it on Amazon. I don't know. I'm just going to wait and see what happens. It's still a very nice book. And all these "official" publications are error filled, for some reason.

  3. i'm also looking forward to seeing if there is indeed any difference between editions that come w the blu-ray set and regularly ordered books. Jason (Spy Vibe)

  4. Did Amazon or DK say that's why the book is offsale at Amazom? Nothing in your blog says so explicitly.

Just because A->B and B->C does not mean A->C.

    1. I'm going by what Graham said on CBn. But, yeah, I'd like to hear from DK themselves. I sent them an email asking them to clarify the situation. Will update when/if I hear back.

  5. Any word on how this affects the version of the book Amazon was planning to include on pre-orders for the Blu-ray box set that comes out soon?

Graham Rye ... "So...no corrected edition, etc"

Does Graham actually know anything that's going on, except that he wrote a letter complaining about errors in the book? Seems like a LOT of speculation.

    1. To be fair to Graham, I'm the one who said "no corrected edition, etc." but, yeah, I'm not sure what the heck is going on here now. I wish DK would have communicated with me. Posting this might have been a mistake.

  7. Relax guys. Same thing happened with Alien Vault book, which also has lots of added goodies in it. Obviously, someone just cant comprehend this, and immediately filed the complaint hoping to sue amazon for millions of dollars.
Now both books are back on sale.

  8. I got my abridged version today w the blu-ray set. it's 74 pages, where the complete book listing on Amazon clocks it at 304 pages. i'll be curious to hear some reviews from folks who have both. i like the format so far, though it does seem potentially a little small for some artwork.

  9. well, the actual poster book is quite different! about 4 times larger, a dense 304 pages with chapters for each film, all housed in a thick slipcase.
