Pegasus will use UK artwork on their upcoming JOHN GARDNER reprints

Great news today for those fans who were not crazy about the cover art for the U.S. John Gardner reprints from Pegasus (and I count myself among those). Simon Gardner has posted on Facebook that Pegasus will jettison the original designs and instead use the the same artwork that is to feature on the new UK paperback editions from Orion.

For Special Services old artwork (left) and the new (right)

Not only is this a vast improvement (IMO), but this also means we'll also have these covers sooner than expected as the first three Pegasus books, License Renewed, For Special Services, and Icebreaker are due for release in the U.S. on October 12, 2011.

Check out our special Gardner Renewed page for pre-order links and the latest release date information on all the Gardner-Bond reprints in the U.S. and UK.

Thank you Simon!

  1. Absolutely right too. The old artwork was atrocious.

  2. Good move. Though I'm personally a bit conflicted: if they had executed the original concept better, and come up with a better pulpy design like that (same layout, but artwork more comparable to Fahey), then I would have bought them, even though I already own them all in plenty of other editions. The new design is a much classier design that will look far better on modern store shelves (or is "store shelves" an anachronism in this post-Borders world?) and should definitely attract casual contemporary readers better--AND that better represents the contents of the books, which don't hail from the same pulpy paperback era of the 1950s that spawned Fleming's originals and therefore made that look right for those books. So I think it's all around the right move. But as good as they look, and as contemporary, there's nothing there to draw me as a collector like there would be for a pulpy design with better artwork.

Unless of course they do a box set...
