IAN FLEMING PUBLICATIONS Holiday Message

Ian Fleming Publications has signed off for the year with lovely Christmas card and a hint of what's to come in 2023.

The original Bond adventures, plus Ian’s non-fiction titles, will be published as paperbacks for the first time under our own imprint in April 2023, celebrating the 70th anniversary of Casino Royale. We hope that these new editions will not only be must-haves for our dedicated fans but also become the entry point for new fans and the paperbacks that become the first, cherished copies on their burgeoning bookshelves. The covers for these are a closely guarded secret for now, but we can say that we are delighted to be working with our old friends, the immensely talented Webb & Webb team, on the designs. Look out for them in the new year. Other editions are in the pipeline, all of which will offer something new and different, and which we can’t wait to start working on.

We will be announcing our Fleming backlist partnership in the States very soon, but rest assured that there will be lovely new editions (featuring wonderfully striking covers) in US shops in 2023.

There are of course also new projects in development, which we will be sharing with you as soon as we can. We’re very excited about what is on the horizon.

The 70th anniversary will give us lots of opportunities to celebrate Ian Fleming’s legacy, and we will be talking more about that in the new year. Please keep watching our social media outlets and website for news. Perhaps even sign up for Miss Moneypenny’s dispatches (aka our newsletter), the first of which will be dispatched shortly.

Wishing everyone the Seasons Greetings from The Book Bond. I'll see you next year!

HARPER COLLINS reveals 2023 cover art

American publisher Harper Collins has revealed some cover art for their Ian Fleming reprints next year. Pretty uninspired. Not much more to say than that.

Presumably these are not the covers for the new IFP published Bond novels in the UK that will mark the 70th Anniversary next year. Those should be something special.

Thanks to Brisco at Double O Section for the alert.

The Folio Society releases FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

The Folio Society has released their next illustrated slip-cased Ian Fleming classic, For Your Eyes Only.

Readers might be familiar with the titles of the stories contained within For Your Eyes Only, but the adventures they depict might surprise them. As well as the expected – and eagerly anticipated – danger, thrills and action that Bond is so well known for, these five stories peel back the layers of Fleming’s complex hero, revealing, as crime writer Ian Rankin describes it, ‘a James Bond few of us have had the good fortune to meet’. Series artist Fay Dalton returns to provide her own irresistible spin on MI6’s greatest, with seven full-colour illustrations and an especially dramatic slipcase. The smart binding design calls to mind Bond’s impeccably tailored suits, making this another unmissable entry in the ever-popular Folio Bond collection.

For Your Eyes Only Folio Edition can be purchased from the Folio Society website.

IFP to publish BOND books under its own imprint in 2023

As promised, Ian Fleming Publications have made a big announcement on this "James Bond Day." Below is their press release in full:

Welcome home, 007: Ian Fleming Publications to publish James Bond books under its own imprint in spring 2023

LONDON. Today, Wednesday 5 October, ‘James Bond Day’: Ian Fleming Publications Ltd (IFPL) announces plans to publish Ian Fleming’s books under its own imprint – a move that marks an exciting future for 007.

Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, the family company that owns the literary copyright in his books, will be honouring the legacy of James Bond’s creator by producing its own editions of the 007 novels as well as non-fiction and the children’s classic Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.

The imprint – Ian Fleming Publications – will launch fresh editions in the UK and Commonwealth markets in spring 2023. Fleming’s original Bond novels and short story collections will be available from 13 April, exactly 70 years to the day after Ian Fleming first introduced special agent 007 to the world with the publication of Casino Royale. To date, since 1953, more than one hundred million Bond books have been sold worldwide.

Initially, new editions of the original adventures will be released in paperback and as eBooks, with covers by the design company Webb & Webb. Prestige hardbacks and limited editions will follow.

The logo for Ian Fleming Publications and The Ian Fleming Estate has long been the swallow tail hummingbird and it will be used as the colophon on books published by the imprint. The swallow tail hummingbird – or ‘doctor bird’ – is the national bird of Jamaica, the spiritual home of James Bond and where Ian Fleming famously wrote the legendary adventures. The doctor bird logo is the Fleming mark of authenticity and quality.

Ian Fleming Publications will be led by Managing Director Corinne Turner, alongside Simon Ward, Publishing Manager.

Corinne Turner comments: “IFPL has enjoyed many years' collaboration with publishing partners Random House and Penguin, but we feel it is time for a change of direction. The 70th anniversary of Casino Royale is an ideal opportunity to bring publication of Ian’s books in-house, enabling us to engage directly with readers and fans. We hope our new editions will reach as wide an audience as possible, attracting long-time readers as well those who have yet to discover the Bond novels.”

Fergus Fleming, Ian Fleming’s nephew, adds: “Before he wrote best-selling novels, Ian was a publisher. That IFP should publish his own books completes the circle.”

The website – www.ianfleming.com – already a destination for anyone interested in Fleming, his life and his literary works, will be developed throughout 2023 to house a direct-to-consumer shop, as well as newsletters, competitions, features and treasures from the archive. There will be exclusives and bonus content for those who sign up to the mailing list.

The Curtis Brown Group, IFPL’s literary agent, will continue to manage subsidiary rights licensing for the new imprint. Jonny Geller, CEO said: “Ian Fleming Publications has always been an innovative, dynamic and inventive manager of Ian Fleming’s work and everyone at Curtis Brown is looking forward to working with them on this next exciting stage. Finding a new generation of readers of James Bond has always been the top priority and IFPL’s publishing plans of the classic original novels will do this with huge energy and creativity.”

Ian Fleming Publications will be working closely with core high street retailers, independent book shops and libraries to ensure Ian’s 007 stories can be accessed by everyone. Sales and distribution will be handled by Turnaround, while Faber Factory will be handling the eBooks.

The move marks a new direction for Ian Fleming publishing as the 10-year licensing agreement with Penguin Random House (Vintage), for the UK and Commonwealth, comes to an end. IFPL will continue to work with partners internationally.

IAN FLEMING FOUNDATION 30th Anniversary party

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Ian Fleming Foundation at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, CA. The Petersen currently has the "Bond in Motion" exhibition featuring cars from the IFF collection (and few on loan from Eon). It was a marvelous night packed with Bond VIPs. I was very excited to meet Lucy Fleming's son, Robert Laycock, although we talked Houdini rather than 007. Great to see Bond author Raymond Benson and his lovely family in attendance. It was also nice to reconnect with many Bond friends I haven't seen in a long time.

Gloria Hendry, Maud Adams, and Luciana Paluzzi there to provide Bond Girl glamor. As you can see below, Luciana still knows how to mount a motorcycle, even when it's a snow mobile.

Thanks to Athena Stamos, seen below with Octopussy herself, for the pics.

You can keep up with the Ian Fleming Foundation via their official website, Facebook page, and YouTube.

DOUBLE OR NOTHING released today in the UK

Today sees the release of Double or Nothing, Kim Sherwood's highly anticipated first book in a new series that introduces a modern generation of double O agents in a reimagined British Secret Service.

I've read the book and it's good. Very good. Kim Sherwood is a talented writer and this promises to be a bold series. The absence of James Bond does make this tough for an old traditionalist like me to fully embrace. But inclusion of familiar faces like Moneypenny and Felix Leiter help, and I was especially happy to see the appearance of an unexpected Bond Girl.

The book has been brilliantly marketed and I expect many will find it a breath of fresh air. Here's hoping the plan is to bring 007 himself into the series in the next book.

You can purchase Double or Nothing at Amazon.co.uk. You can find a full schedule of UK book events HERE.

The U.S. edition will be released next year

The UK Amazon now has a pre-order listing for the paperback edition Anthony Horowitz's With A Mind to Kill. It shows April 13, 2023 as the release date from Vintage. No cover art. While I do like the hardcover art, I'm hoping for something different on the paperback, just for collector variety.

KIM SHERWOOD on Ian Fleming's style

In the run up to the release of Double or Nothing, HarperFiction on Twitter is sharing a series of short film clips of author Kim Sherwood talking about her journey from Bond fan to Bond author. I really like today's installment in which she recalls reading Ian Fleming's From Russia With Love for the first time.

Kim SHERWOOD and Charlie HIGSON event, Sept. 1

Kim Sherwood will be joined by Young Bond author Charlie Higson at a special Double or Nothing launch day event on September 1st at the British Library. The event will "celebrate the ever-thrilling and evolving world of 007" and will be followed by a book signing. I like these two! (Still hoping Charlie will write an adult Bond novel some day.)

Check out this 1987 Italian paperback of Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only from publisher Oscar Mondadori. Great cover art.

I got this image from Peter Lorenz's wonderful Illustrated 007 - The Art of James Bond blog. Peter recently retired his blog, which is a real shame as he shared some incredible James Bond book artwork over the years. Happily, he left the blog online as an archive, so I encourage you to have a browse.

Thank you Peter for all your hard work!

The original NEW BOND

As we all enjoy the latest James Bond continuation novel, With A Mind To Kill by Anthony Horowitz, I thought I share this look back at the very first time James Bond was continued in Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis. I love seeing old ads for "The New James Bond".

Colonel Sun was released in March 1968 to surprisingly negative, even hostile reviews. This may be why the "Robert Markham" series wasn't continued and why Amis didn't write another Bond (in interviews at the time he said he might). But the book has lived on and is now generally regarded as one of the best by fans. It was most recently reprinted in hardcover in 2018.

BOND GOES TO JAIL in Waterstones Exclusive

Having received my stenciled edge Waterstones Exclusive Edition of With A Mind To Kill, I'm happy to report that it also contains additional material as did Waterstones previous special editions of the Horowitz books. For some reason, this was not advertised on the Waterstones website, but it is unique to this edition.

The chapter is called "Bond Goes To Jail" and has very short extract from an unused television script by Ian Fleming in which 007 goes undercover at San Quentin prison in California. Author Anthony Horowitz then explains how he originally set out to use the idea of Bond in jail in With A Mind To Kill, just as he used unpublished Fleming material in his previous two Bonds. But, ultimately, he decided it wouldn't work.

You can purchase the Waterstones Exclusive Edition signed or unsigned.

As I previously reported, Goldsboro Books is also offering their own signed and numbered limited editions with sprayed black edges. No extras in that, but this Goldsboro edition may eventually turn out to be the more rare. Also, my friend Tanner at the excellent Double O Section tells me his Goldsboro edition doesn't have a price on the dust jacket, so that is a variant jacket.

Or you can just purchase the regular UK edition at Amazon.co.uk and the U.S. edition from Harper Collins at Amazon.com. But I bet there's some of you out there who will get them all!

You can read my review of With A Mind To Kill HERE.

30 years of FOREVER

It was 30 years ago that John Gardner's 11th original James Bond novel Death Is Forever arrived in the U.S. bookstores. This was one of handful of titles that was released first in the United States. While not one of my favorite Gardner books, it was a thrill to have a new Bond every year and all the Gardner books remain special to me.

Here's a review of the book from 30 years ago today. Is 007 forever? I think we know the answer to that!

The Indianapolis Star.

My own copy of Death Is Forever, purchased in 1992, has a sticker on the cover pitching it as a "Super Value!" I normally strip off any stickers to have a clean cover. However, when a sticker says something Bond specific, as this one does ("Bond is Back"), it stays. And this wasn't added later in a clearance sale. I bought all the Gardner books the instant they hit the bookstores and this sticker was there on day one. Would love to know the story behind it and how many books may have it.

You can buy the recent reprint editions of Death Is Forever at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

Dynamite restores "OO7" in new series

After dropping "007" from the title of their last three series, Dynamite is bringing it back with a series in August called, yes, OO7. It will be written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by Marco Finnegan. Below is the cover of issue #1 and a plot description.

The most famous spy in fiction returns to heat up the summer comics season with a thrilling tale of double agents, assassins, old flames, and heaps of intrigue. James Bond finds himself outplayed with a metaphorical bad hand on a Russian excursion, forced to eliminate an asset he was meant to extract. A shootout with his enemy counterparts leaves Bond with more questions than answers… questions about their American accents, their bleeding-edge technology, and most importantly, how they seem to know so much about him.

Abandoned by his superiors, facing suspension at MI6, and questioning his waning sense of duty, 007 gets an urgent message from former 00 agent Gwendolyn Gann, a mentor and old flame from his earliest days. Gann’s gotten back in the spy game, and needs Bond’s help… but will Bond make it on time? And what are her ties to the mysteruous new player known only as Myrmidon?

I always wondered if Dynamite dropping "007" from their James Bond series title was an attempt to synchronize with No Time To Die and the idea that Lashana Lynch's Nomi was now 007. I'm glad to see it come back.

You can see some alternate covers for issue #1 at Dynamite Entertainment

BOOK BOND REVIEW: With A Mind To Kill the memory of No Time To Die

Anthony Horowitz's third and final James Bond novel, With A Mind To Kill, is released today by Jonathan Cape in the UK. I've had the pleasure of reading it and I can report it's excellent! Horowitz mines one of the richest untapped veins of the literary James Bond; namely, what happened to 007 in Russia between the books You Only Live Twice and The Man With The Golden Gun. It's Horowitz's darkest Bond with a powerful climax that perfectly caps his time as the reigning continuation novelist and, possibly, this particular era of period Bond novels.

For a third time Horowitz proves he knows exactly what makes a great James Bond adventure. The book is packed with tension and moves like a rocket. Without going into major spoilers, the book delivers an epic action sequence set in London before moving onto Russia where much of the novel is set. Bond's mission is clear cut, the locations are atmospheric, and the stakes are sky high from page one. We also have a solid Bond Girl in Katya Leonova. And it certainly isn't hard to see Russia as the villain these days, which makes this book, set in 1965, feel (tragically) up to the minute.

If I have a criticism (and this wouldn't be a proper review without) it would be with the frequent callbacks to past Fleming books. While call backs to The Man With The Golden Gun are integral with the plot and expected, it's possible every book gets a nod in some form. This feels a bit calculated and while fans may like it, I thought it was a touch distracting. But that's a quibble.

So how does With A Mind To Kill stand against Horowitz's two other Bonds? I think most will agree With A Mind To Kill is his best and I wouldn't argue with that. However, it is a darker book, and I'm still very much suffering PTSD from the last James Bond film, No Time To Die, with its relentless bleakness, hopelessness, and humiliating death of 007. I really need some fun! So while With A Mind To Kill is superb and going dark has never troubled me in the past, at this moment in time I still rank Trigger Mortis at the top of my Horowitz list as it seems the lightest of his outings. But talk to me again in a year.

I've never been more happy to add a new Bond book to my bookshelf and continue the adventure. Thanks to the caring custodians at Ian Fleming Publications and the talented Anthony Horowitz, JAMES BOND LIVES!

WITH A MIND TO KILL released in the U.S. today

Anthony Horowitz's With A Mind To Kill is released today in the U.S. and Canada by Harper Collins.

This time the publisher has used the UK cover art instead of creating their own unique design as they did for the last two Horowitz books. While a bit disappointing to me as a collector, it's not unprecedented and it's a great cover. (Call me crazy, but I kinda miss the days of the uniform series covers like on Gardner and Benson books.)

The real advantage here is you can get the book a few days before the UK edition, which is set for release from Jonathan Cape on Thursday. (I'll be holding back my review until then.)

Purchase the U.S. edition of With A Mind To Kill on Amazon.com. A Large Print edition is also available from HarperLuxe.

Vintage Paperback Book Repair - MOONRAKER

I very much enjoy the YouTube Channel of Jules Burt, a vintage paperback book collector from the UK. Jules has several videos devoted to the Bond books. This is one of my favorites. Enjoy.

In this video I take a rather worn and tired copy of the rare Pan Books 'Director's' edition of Ian Fleming's third James Bond title, Moonraker and restore it back to near its former glory. The cover is removed and repaired, the top and tails of the spine are glued back into place and the spine roll is sorted. Hope you enjoy the process! If you enjoy this video for the ASMR qualities, that's just a bonus.

ZERO MINUS 25

It was 25 years ago today that Raymond Benson's debut continuation novel, Zero Minus Ten, was released in the UK by by Hodder & Stoughton. Raymond offered up a timely 007 adventure dealing with a threat to Britain's handover of Hong Kong to China. He brought back many Bond traditions, notably the structure of the British Secrets Service which John Gardner had altered in his final books. I recently gave Zero Minus Ten a re-read and liked it even more than I remembered. It's a great Bond book!

Raymond Benson would go on to pen a total of six original Bond novels, three novelizations, and three shorts stories. So here's to the beginning of the Benson era. These were fun years.

You can buy Zero Minus Ten at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

WITH A MIND TO KILL U.S. cover looks familiar

Cover art for the U.S. hardcover edition of Anthony Horowitz's With A Mind To Kill has appeared on Amazon and publisher Harper Collins' website...and it looks familiar!

As you can see, the artwork is the same as the UK hardcover from Jonathan Cape. The only difference I can spot is the U.S. edition touts Horowitz as the "New York Times Bestselling Author" while the UK edition reads "The Number One Bestseller".

If this holds, it will be a little disappointing that we don't get alternative U.S. cover art as that's part of the fun of collecting multiple editions. But it is nice cover art. And this isn't a first. From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, For Your Eyes OnlyThe Spy Who Loved Me, Colonel Sun, and SilverFin shared the same cover art on their UK and U.S. editions.

The U.S. edition of With A Mind To Kill will be released on May 24, 2022 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com.
