Some fans receiving 2nd editions of CARTE BLANCHE

Some fans on the CommandBond.net forums are complaining that they have been receiving 2nd editions of Carte Blanche from retailers like Amazon and Waterstone's. One fan who complained back to Amazon received a response saying only the indie edition (black jacket) was a first. But other fans refute this, and a quick scan of eBay confirms there are white jacketed first editions out there.

Still, it appears landing a 1st edition is not a guarantee, so if this matters to you, make sure you check out the copyright page before you head to the check out counter.

CARTE BLANCHE getting strong reviews across the UK

Looks like Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche is getting very positive reviews across the UK. A sampling:

Scottish Daily Express - "Bond fans will enjoy Deaver’s slightly mischievous take on Ian Fleming. Deaver fans will enjoy the taut plotting and the action scenes and, by the way, it is going to make a great movie."

Evening Standard - "The most impressive feature of Carte Blanche is the ingenuity of the breathless, blood-thirsty plot. A master of misdirection, Deaver manufactures more surprises than anyone flogging an old warhorse can be expected to produce."

The Guardian - "Fans will approve of Jeffery Deaver's James Bond, who is both the daring spy of old and a product of the 21st century."

The Telegraph - "Ian Fleming purists who agonise over each new incarnation of Bond can shake a celebratory martini and light up a Morland’s if they dare."

The Independent - "Crucially, the novel proves itself worthy of the 007 logo on its spine by presenting us with one of the most bone-chillingly creepy bad guys in history."

The Express - "Deaver’s enthusiasm for Bond comes through on every page and he puts the gift for plotting that has garnered him such massive popularity to superb use here."

Carte Blanche is available now in the UK. It will be released in the U.S. on June 14.

CARTE BLANCHE UK launch lifts the roof at St Pancras International

The first copies of the eagerly awaited new Bond book, Carte Blanche, arrived in style at St Pancras International in London today (Wednesday 25 May 2011). Copies of the book by the best–selling American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, published in the UK tomorrow by Hodder & Stoughton, were delivered by the Royal Marines Commandos in a stunning display involving abseiling, a fast car and a beautiful Bond girl on a motorbike.

In a scene which could have been lifted from a James Bond novel, Jeffery Deaver pulled up at Europe’s longest bar – The Champagne Bar at St Pancras International – in a special Carte Blanche red Bentley Continental GT flanked by a Bond girl clad in black leathers.

It was by air, however, that the author received the first copy of his novel. In a dramatic twist to the launch, four members of the Royal Marines Display Team descended from the iconic roof of St Pancras International onto the concourse below, bearing copies of the novel. The books were handed over to Deaver in front of members of Ian Fleming’s family and invited guests, before being put under lock and key in an undisclosed location. The plot of the book remains, until midnight tonight, a closely guarded secret.

Despite the secrecy surrounding Carte Blanche, it can be revealed that each part of the launch had particular relevance to the new novel and to Ian Fleming, the creator of the original James Bond novels, who would have been 103 this Saturday, 28 May. St Pancras International, at the heart of London, is a fitting venue for a very British icon who became an international phenomenon whilst the Bentley Continental GT is the car of choice for Deaver’s Bond. The day’s Bond girl, who drove a BSA 1966 Spitfire motorbike to the launch, is inspired by one of Bond’s love interests in Carte Blanche, whose passion for speed and fast engines rivals Bond’s own.

As an integral component of the Naval Service the role of the Royal Marines Commandos is also pertinent. A Commander in the Royal Navy, Ian Fleming worked as Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the war years and was responsible for the creation of a specialist unit of commandos known as 30 Commando or the 30 Assault Unit: trained commandos specialising in targeting enemy headquarters to secure documentation with an intelligence value. In Carte Blanche, Jeffery Deaver’s 21st century Bond served in the Royal Naval Reserve, including a tour in Afghanistan, before joining the secret service.

Lucy Fleming, Ian Fleming’s niece, commented at today’s launch: “On Saturday my uncle, Ian Fleming, would be 103 years old. If he had been here today he would have loved the occasion. “With his brilliant plot and clever twists, his perfectly horrible villain and his detailed knowledge of the British intelligence Service, Jeffery Deaver brings Bond straight into the heart of modern espionage.”

Carte Blanche will be published in hardback by Hodder & Stoughton tomorrow, Thursday 26 May 2011, just ahead of Ian Fleming’s birthday on Saturday 28 May. Priced at £19.99, the book will be available nationwide. For more information, visit www.007carteblanche.co.uk.

CARTE BLANCHE character teasers

The website thrillers4u.com has posted some Carte Blanche character teasers. We've learned about the new Bond's car, his gun, and some locations, but we really haven't heard a peep about the Bond Girl or villian. Well, here's our first peep.

Characters

James Bond's story
- Deniable... Dispensable more likely. The price of that '00' tag. The question is... How far do I go?

Beautiful woman's story
- Femme fatale? I'm certainly more than a piece of window dressing.

Arch-villain's story
- Bond and I will cross swords. That's a very old-fashioned expression for the turmoil we will create.

It's likely these are official as thrillers4u are also promising their own extract on May 26, and the site is linked on the official Ian Fleming website.

Carte Blanche will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK on May 26, 2011 and by Simon & Schuster in the U.S. on June 14, 2011.

BLOOD FEVER cover updated

Disney Books have updated the title treatment on their paperback edition of Blood Fever by Charlie Higson. The book now matches the title treatments (front and spine) of Hurricane Gold and the recently released By Royal Command paperback. Watch for SilverFin and Double or Die to received the same new treatments as stocks are replenished.

The old Blood Fever cover (left) and the new (right).

First released in 2006, this second Young Bond novel finds young James Bond battling pirates and a mad Italian Count in Sardina. I've always said Blood Fever is possibly the best James Bond continuation novels yet written. But will I still be able to say this after Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche is released next Thursday?

Stay tuned!

Croatian edition of MOONRAKER unveiled at gala event

Cover model Ana Kurobasa

ZAGREB, May 16, 2011 – At a gala event held last week at Le Méridien Lav Hotel in Split, Croatian publishing house Algoritam has revealed the latest in its line of special first editions of Ian Fleming’s 007 books, Moonraker.

The Croatian imprint is historically unique in that it features the work of the nation’s most beautiful models and most talented photographers, who are recreating the Bond Girls featured in each title as closely as possible to the author’s description. As with the previous two novels, Casino Royale and Live and Let Die, and the Quantum of Solace short story collection, the first edition of Moonraker is issued in a strictly-limited run of 1000 hardcover copies with laminated, silver-foil embossed covers.

“It is a tremendous responsibility to bring the original James Bond books to a new language,” said Mr. Vladimir Cvetković Sever, the editor and translator of the Algoritam 007 imprint. “Conversely, it is just as tremendous an opportunity. Using the same care with which we are ensuring that the translation is faithful and as rich as the original, our team has now produced the fourth in a series of covers that feature character portraits of Ian Fleming’s leading ladies.”

Portraying Gala Brand of Moonraker is Ana Kurobasa, the first runner-up of the 2008 Croatian Miss Universe pageant. As Miss Kurobasa is based in Split, the Algoritam team decided to produce the entire cover there, utilising local talent. The photographer, Mr. Hrvoje Radeljić, was instrumental in creating a stage set depicting the polished-gun interior of the Moonraker rocket shaft in his studio, while a dedicated crew styled Miss Kurobasa to resemble Gala Brand as closely as possible.

The results have met with approval from the guests attending the gala at the Lav, a hotel with a longstanding connection to the Bond Girl phenomenon – their iconic antecedent, Ursula Andress, was its first celebrity guest back in 1973. “It is only fitting that this hotel now celebrates the latest in this very select group of ladies,” remarked the CEO of Algoritam, Mr. Neven Antičević. “We are grateful to the British Embassy for their assistance in organising this event, and particularly to Ian Fleming Publications Ltd., who have been extending gracious support to our imprint since its inception three years ago.”

As Algoritam gears up for the production of its upcoming 007 release, Diamonds Are Forever, it was also pleased to announce that Moonraker and very limited amounts of its previous 007 special editions are shortly becoming available to the international collectors through an exclusive partnership with Croatia’s leading online luxury goods retailer, www.topbrands.hr.

From Italy with love

Yesterday we got a first look at the French Carte Blanche cover art -- today we have the Italian. This was just posted on author Jeffery Deaver's Facebook page. Looks like Italian publisher Rizzoli isn't going with the smoke trail motif that I expect we'll see on most international editions, but are doing their own thing. Hey, I like it, if for no other reason that it's different.

The Italian Carte Blanche (Carta Bianca) will be released on May 26 and can be pre-ordered at BOL.it and Amazon.it.

Carte Blanche will be released in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the Netherlands, and Korea on May 26; in France on June 1; in the Czech Republic on June 6; in the USA and Canada on June 14; in Israel on June 15; in Spain on June 26; and in Poland on June 29.

A Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, said to be the only drivable example of the Chitty cars built for the 1968 movie, sold at auction this past weekend for $805,000 — far less than the $1-$2 million it was expected to command. (Click headline for full story.)

Toby Stephens will read UK audiobook - box revealed

A few weeks back I uncovered that actor Toby Stephens, who played the villain Gustav Graves in the 2002 Pierce Brosnan Bond film, Die Another Die, would be reading the U.S. Carte Blanche unabridged audiobook. Now I've confirmed that Stephens' reading will also be available in the UK as an 11 CD set from Hodder & Stoughton, and as an audio download from audible.co.uk and iTunes.

Here's a look at the full box art. Pretty slick.

CARTE BLANCHE cover copy (officially) released

The cover copy for Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche has been released on Facebook. Of course, we got a peek at this last month via a leak on Amazon (it was later pulled), but for those who missed it, here it is again -- officially:

“The face of war is changing. The other side doesn’t play by the rules much anymore. There’s thinking, in some circles, that we need to play by a different set of rules too . . .”
James Bond, in his early thirties and already a veteran of the Afghan War, has been recruited to a new organization. Conceived in the post-9/11 world, it operates independent of MI5, MI6 and the Ministry of Defense, its very existence deniable. Its aim: To protect the Realm, by any means necessary.
A Night Action alert calls James Bond away from dinner with a beautiful woman. Headquarters has decrypted an electronic whisper about an attack scheduled for later in the week: Casualties estimated in the thousands, British interests adversely affected.
And Agent 007 has been given carte blanche.

Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK on May 26, 2011 and by Simon & Schuster in the U.S. on June 14, 2011.

French CARTE BLANCHE cover art

Cover art for the French edition of Carte Blanche from Flammarion has been revealed on Amazon.fr. With this and the recently released Dutch art, it appears most foreign publishers will be using the same smoke trail artwork as the UK edition. This is similar to how Devil May Care was marketed internationally.

This is James Bond's new gun

According to today's excerpt in The Times, James Bond will be using a Walther PPS in Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche.

The Walther "Police Pistol Slim" is a variant on the P99 (the gun Bond has been carrying in the last several movies) designed to be easily concealed with a 1.04 inch profile. That makes it smaller and lighter than both the PPK and P99. It comes in both 9mm and S&W 40.

Sounds like a perfect choice. Deaver is keeping in the Walther tradition, but going with a gun that makes sense for James Bond's line of work (the P99 was somewhat ridiculous in this regard).

Thanks to Jim, Captain Tightpants, and Jeff007 of the CBn forums.

Mission to find the first fan to read CARTE BLANCHE

Press Release: Bond fans eager to get their hands on the latest James Bond adventure Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver, published by Hodder & Stoughton on Thursday 26 May 2011, have been set a cryptic mission to win the ultimate prize: to be the first fan to read Carte Blanche a day before the rest of the world.

Fans will be challenged to solve a series of cryptic clues and questions in the run-up to Wednesday 25 May, the day before the book’s first worldwide publication. Clues will be posted on websites, Twitter, Facebook, and later Bond-related London-based locations. Participants will need to return regularly to www.facebook.com/007CarteBlanche to unravel the clues, and there will then be one final 007-style secret mission to take place in London. The competition will climax on 25 May, when the winner will receive this ultimate Bond prize.

In classic James Bond style, the winner of the challenge will be picked up in the new Bentley Continental GT - the car driven by Bond in Carte Blanche - and chauffeur-driven to the five star Lanesborough Hotel in London. Here, in luxurious surroundings, they will be able to read the novel through the night, before meeting Jeffery Deaver himself the following day to discuss first-hand the details of the book. Lucky runners-up in the competition will receive invitations to the first public event with Jeffery Deaver on 26 May, where he will be speaking at the Congress Centre in London.

For those Bond fans who aren’t able to travel to London to complete the task, a separate strand of activity will let them compete to win one of 10 sets of books consisting of a signed first edition of Carte Blanche as well as other Jeffery Deaver, Ian Fleming and Charlie Higson titles.

Kelly Weekes, Marketing Director of Hodder & Stoughton, says: “This is an incredibly exciting competiton that reflects the anticipation and secrecy surrounding Carte Blanche. Asking Bond fans to take part in their own cryptic mission will allow every Bond fan to put their Bond knowledge to the test and their clue-solving skills to the limit ahead of the publication of Carte Blanche.”

Hodder & Stoughton have partnered with social media agency Fresh Networks to manage the campaign. Mark Jennings, Account Director, adds: “We are delighted to work with Hodder & Stoughton on this unique project. Many of us are Bond fans and it was fantastic to craft the mission and campaign experience for this icon.”

Here are the first five clues revealed this past week on the Carte Blanche Facebook page:

  • Clue #1: Antarctic explorer finds himself eating in Monopoly's prime location.
  • Clue #2: A borough of Gold where you'll find signed first editions.
  • Clue #3: Number 1 Row stitched up Bond.
  • Clue #4: Enjoy a martini with Ian Fleming at the bar of the Duchess's husband.
  • Clue #5: Founded by a Prime Minister and named after it's head waiter.

CARTE BLANCHE extracts in The Times

There is a major extract from Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche in today's The Times. According to chatter on the CommanderBond.net forums, the first two chapters are extracted and they are getting an enthusiastic thumbs up.

The book starts with Bond on a surveillance mission in Serbia. The opening chapter represents the thoughts and concerns of the drivers of a Serbian Rail freight locomotive loaded with drums of the chemical that killed people at Bhopal.

"...and so at ten o'clock last night, the rangy tentacles of these events had reached out and clutched Bond..."

There will be further extracts in The Times on Monday and Tuesday. They can be read online behind a £1 paywall.

Thanks to Jim.

Closing The Young Bond Dossier

YBD ad art by Evan Willnow
With the release of the two SilverFin special editions and the By Royal Command U.S. paperback, I've decided to cease updating my other website, The Young Bond Dossier. From now on all James Bond news, young and old, will be reported here on The Book Bond.

I started YBD in 2006 after the release of Charlie Higson's second Young Bond novel, Blood Fever, a book I still consider to be the best James Bond continuation novel yet written. Over the course of six years I've has a blast reporting (obsessively) every last detail of this groundbreaking series. Along the way I landed some terrific scoops, and had the pleasure of conducting several exclusive interviews with author Charlie Higson.

The high point came in 2008 when I went to London for the Devil May Care launch and paperback release of Hurricane Gold. It was during this trip that YBD became the official news source for Puffin's own Young Bond website, and also the news feed for the official Ian Fleming Publications website (a real honor!). Best of all, YDB allowed me to get to know Charlie Higson personally, as well as all the good people at IFP, Coleman-Getty, Puffin Books, and Disney-Hyperion.

Whether or not there are going to be more Young Bond novels...I have no idea. But it's clear there just isn't enough happening in the world of Young Bond to justify a dedicated website. Also, the iWeb software I used to create the site back in '06 has not been updated in years and has grown creaky and problematic. So I figured this was a good time to fold things up. Even if we should get news of a Young Bond Series 2 (still my hope!), it will be covered here instead of YBD. So with that I leave you with an optimistic...

YOUNG BOND WILL RETURN

With Charlie Higson in San Francisco for the U.S. release of Blood Fever
