The original NEW BOND

As we all enjoy the latest James Bond continuation novel, With A Mind To Kill by Anthony Horowitz, I thought I share this look back at the very first time James Bond was continued in Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis. I love seeing old ads for "The New James Bond".

Colonel Sun was released in March 1968 to surprisingly negative, even hostile reviews. This may be why the "Robert Markham" series wasn't continued and why Amis didn't write another Bond (in interviews at the time he said he might). But the book has lived on and is now generally regarded as one of the best by fans. It was most recently reprinted in hardcover in 2018.

New hardcover edition of COLONEL SUN released

A new hardcover edition of the first James Bond continuation novel Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis is released today by Pegasus.

The first James Bond novel published after the death of Ian Fleming in 1964, this classic thriller follows James Bond on a mission to a small Aegean island to track down M’s kidnappers―the malign Colonel Sun Liang-tan and his ex-Nazi commander cohort, the deadly Von Richter.

Lunch, a quiet game of golf, a routine social call on M, who is convalescing in his Regency house in Berkshire―the life of secret agent James Bond has begun to fall into a pattern that threatens complacency, until the sunny afternoon when M is kidnapped and all of his house staff savagely murdered.

The action ricochets across the globe, but quickly enough lands Bond on a volcanic Greek island, where the malign Colonel Sun Liang-tan of the People's Liberation Army of China is collaborating with the ex-Nazi commander, Von Richter, in planning a world-dominating conspiracy. The stakes have never been higher, nor the dangers more complex. Bond’s allies―the beautiful, brown-haired Greek agent, Ariadne Alexandrou; along with a tough-as-nails former World War II resistance fighter―are quickly neutralized by the venomous Colonel Sun. Alone and unarmed, faces off against these two nefarious villains.

Stripped of all professional aids, James Bond faces the deadly devices of Colonel Sun and his Nazi cohort in a test that brings him to the verge of his physical abilities.

You can purchase Colonel Sun from Amazon (U.S.) and Amazon.co.uk (UK).

SPECTRE on Blu-ray and DVD, February 9, 2016

I don't think this has been officially announced yet, but according to Amazon.com, the new James Bond film SPECTRE will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. on February 9, 2016.

The latest Bond film pulled from a host of literary sources, including: Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice, Octopussy and Colonel Sun (the Kingsley Amis estate even gets an acknowledgement in the credits).

Pre-order SPECTRE on Blu-ray or DVD from Amazon.

SUN inspires SPECTRE

The official Ian Fleming Publications website reports that the new James Bond film SPECTRE, which had its Royal premier in London on Monday, features a pivotal scene from the first 007 continuation novel Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis. I've not yet seen the movie (U.S. release is November 6), so I don't know what that scene is, nor does IFP reveal it. They just tease:

The Colonel Sun scene which features in SPECTRE is one of pivotal importance both to the film and the book and fans are encouraged to identify which part stems from Amis’ pen.

Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. commented that "The Fleming family and The Kingsley Amis Estate hope that fans of SPECTRE will be encouraged to reach for this thrilling book by one of the finest writers of the 20th century."

Of course, this isn't the first time an element from a continuation novel had found its way into a James Bond film. Check out: Déjá vu, Mr. Bond: The surprising similarities between the continuation novels and the James Bond films.

Colonel Sun was recently reprinted by Vintage Books in the UK and is available from Amazon.co.uk.

COLONEL SUN reprint coming from Vintage

Here's some great news. Vintage will release Colonel Sun by Kingley Amis with cover art that matches their recent Ian Fleming paperbacks. This is the first reprint of Colonel Sun since 1995, and it's always exciting to have this first continuation novel as part of a current set of Bonds.

The first ever Bond continuation, originally published by Jonathan Cape in 1968, now finally back in print and published to coincide with the forthcoming Bond film Spectre.

Lunch at Scott's, a quiet game of golf, a routine social call on his chief M, convalescing in his Regency house in Berkshire - the life of secret agent James Bond has begun to fall into a pattern that threatens complacency … until the sunny afternoon when M is kidnapped and his house staff savagely murdered. The action ricochets across the globe to a volcanic Greek island where the glacial, malign Colonel Sun Liang-tan of the People's Liberation Army of China collaborates with an ex-nazi atrocity expert in a world-menacing conspiracy. Stripped of all professional aids, Bond faces unarmed the monstrous devices of Colonel Sun in a test that brings him to the verge of his physical endurance.

Colonel Sun will be released on October 15 and can be pre-orded at Amazon.co.uk.

WHATCULTURE.COM counts down the "10 Unadapted 007 Stories We’d Love To See Made Next"

Whatculture.com has posted a blog counting down 10 continuation novels that could make good Bond films. It's a pretty thoughtful list, although I would have swapped out #4 Scorpius in favor of Brokenclaw, which I think could make a great Craig-era Bond. Read: "Bond 24: 10 Unadapted 007 Stories We’d Love To See Made Next."

If you don't feel like clicking through, here's the list:

10. High Time To Kill (Raymond Benson)
9. Young Bond (Charlie Higson)
8. License Renewed (John Gardner)
7. For Special Services (John Gardner)
6. Icebreaker (John Gardner)
5. Devil May Care (Sebastian Faulks)
4. Scorpius (John Gardner)
3. Colonel Sun (Kingsley Amis)
2. The Man With The Red Tattoo (Raymond Benson)
1. Carte Blanche (Jeffery Deaver)

COLONEL SUN eBook released today

Great news! The very first James Bond continuation novel, Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis (as Robert Markham), is released today as an eBook by IFP. Cover art matches the artwork on the recent Raymond Benson eBook releases.

Bond finds himself working in alliance with the beautiful tawny-blonde agent of a rival secret service in the struggle to overpower this ruthless enemy who discards the unwritten rules of espionage. Stripped of all professional aids, Bond faces unarmed the monstrous devices of Colonel Sun in a test that brings him to the verge of his physical endurance. Colonel Sun was published in 1968 and is the first novel featuring the character of James Bond to appear after the death of his creator, Ian Fleming. It was published by Kingsley Amis under the name of Robert Markham.

THRILLING CITIES and THE DIAMOND SMUGGLERS included in Vintage deal

The Bookseller has offered up a few new details on the big Vintage Bond book deal announced yesterday.

First and foremost is the news that Ian Fleming's two non-fiction books, Thrilling Cities and The Diamond Smugglers, are included in the deal. After many years being out of print, these two titles were released by IFP under own their imprint in 2009, but only in hardcover.

The site also reports that their Vintage Classics Bond set will come after the paperbacks and e-books -- which will appear this summer -- but before the new Bond film, Skyfall in October.

As to the continuation novels, they "are subject to other licence agreements and remain at their current publishers. However, [Corinne] Turner said: "We and Random House hope that our relationship will cover new projects." (Whoa!) Digital rights to the Young Bond novels by Charlie Higson remain with IFP.

The site also reports that "a U.S. deal was in the pipeline, again to find a successor to Penguin, which held world English-language print rights."

Okay, while the rights to the "new" continuation novels are locked up, I wonder if this extends to Colonel Sun as well? Colonel Sun gets a suspiciously prominent mention in the official press release, and Vintage publishes the other works by Sun author Kingsley Amis. Could this mean they already have the rights to Colonel Sun and might republish it as well? Not that it will be an official part of the Fleming Bond "sets", but maybe it will be in the same general style, as I expect Thrilling Cities and The Diamond Smugglers will be.

This would be terrific as Colonel Sun has not been reprinted since the 1990s.

Lots to be excited about here.

This time the collection moves into the post Fleming era with the Daily Express adaptation of the first continuation novel, Colonel Sun (the description calls this "Kingley Amis' controversial post-Fleming story"), and several original strip stories by Jim Lawrence: The Harpies, River of Death, The Golden Ghost, Fear Face, Double Jeopardy, and Starfire.

Amazon.com shows a U.S. release date of April 3.

JAMES BOND UK first edition paperbacks 1955-1979

Here are the James Bond UK first edition paperbacks spanning 1955 (Casino Royale) to 1979 (James Bond and Moonraker). These are all from my own collection. I thought it might be nice to not only show to the covers of these book, but the backs as well. Notice that the back of Moonraker refers to the filming of Casino Royale? Click on each image to enlarge.

It might surprise you to know that the rarest and most valuable book is actually On Her Majesty's Secret Service (followed by Octopussy). For whatever reason, the later books are very hard to find as true UK paperback firsts. The key is to find copies without a price on the cover. Check out page 122 of Bond Bound and you'll see that even their OHMSS -- which is captioned as a first edition -- has a price on the cover.

I should also point out that my You Only Live Twice, which is noted on the copyright page as a first edition, came with a wrap-around dust-jacket featuring the UK tie-in movie art and says on the back "Not for Sale in the UK", so I'm not sure what the story is with this edition. Also, my Live and Let Die is from 1957, but I've never seen an earlier edition so it's possible it was published out of order and this was the true first.

I'll take us into the 1980s and '90s next.

JAMES BOND in the '90s: the complete Coronet set

In 1995 Coronet revamped the James Bond series in the UK with vibrant new covers by David Scutt, Bill Gregory and Paul Robinson. This would be the last set to include Colonel Sun and the only set to include John Gardner and Raymond Benson titles. This series overlapped the end of the Gardner era and the beginning of Benson, so a handful of their first editions received the series treatment, as did two novelizations (kinda).

This Coronet series is notable in that it is the most complete set of James Bond books to date, and maybe the most complete set we'll ever get. Aren't they glorious!

There are a few curiosities in the Coronet set to watch out for. First and foremost are the two editions of Dr. No. According to some fine detective work by Devin Zydel on CommanderBond.net, rejected artwork by Bill Gregory depicting a knife in Honey's (?) hand was "mistakenly" used on the 9th edition only. Copies of Dr. No before and after feature the more common spider art by David Scutt. Not sure why this happened (or even how it could happen), but I personally prefer the knife artwork. This rogue Dr. No is definitely one to seek out (ISBN 0-340-41899-0).*

Coronet curiosities

Another paperback of interest is a 2003 omnibus containing the first three John Gardner books. Even though this was published well after the Coronet series had ended (and IFP were reissuing the books with new covers through Penguin), the book uses the old series logo and artwork from their 1995 For Special Services.

There was also an early plan to release John Gardner's novelization of GoldenEye with this series artwork (the prototype cover featured a bearded Pierce Brosnan). While the final Coronet GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies paperbacks would ultimately sport stand alone cover art, the spines would retain the James Bond Coronet series logo, so they still line up pretty well on the shelf with the other books and could still be considered part of this series. (There are two variations of TND, but I'll get into that when we get into novelizations as a set.)

Finally, for us completists, in 1998 a special Tomorrow Never Dies VHS box set was released in the UK that included a copy of the Raymond Benson Zero Minus Ten paperback from Coronet. The paperback is identical to the retail version, except for the lack of a barcode and ISBN on the back and the inclusion of the words: "Promotional Copy Not For Resale" (right). It's actually noted on the copyright page as being a first edition, so...

On a personal note, I've never been able to locate a copy (at a reasonable price) of Coronet's Win, Lose Or Die for my own collection. I believe it's the only John Gardner paperback that I'm missing. Can anyone help a brother out?

*UPDATE: Stewart Larking, the man who designed all these covers, got in touch with me to share The inside story of the two DR. NO covers.

Déjá vu, Mr. Bond: The surprising similarities between the continuation novels and the James Bond films

At the recent London press conference announcing the title of the new Bond film, Skyfall, we also learned that the new Bond Girl, played by Bérénice Marlohe, will be named Severin. Sound familiar? It should. Just this year we got a Bond villain named Severan in Jeffery Deaver's continuation Bond novel, Carte Blanche.

Just a coincidence? Could be. But this certainly isn't the first time an idea has mysteriously migrated from a continuation novel into one of the James Bond films. Here's my list of surprising similarities, first published on CBn in 2005, which I've now updated.
