New SKYFALL poster is familiar

The final U.S. one-sheet for Skyfall has been released. As usual, some Bond fans are voicing their displeasure, but I really like the simple strong image and the unusual placement of the credits. But maybe I like it because it reminds me of something?

Thanks to Tanner over at the stellar Double O Section blog for reminding me that the image of Daniel Crag is reminiscent of the silhouette first used on the 1982 Berkley paperback edition of Goldfinger (below). The same silhouette later appeared on the covers of Raymond Benson's Never Dream of Dying and The Man With The Red Tattoo.

You might also be interested in reading about another cover silhouette that sparked controversy for being too similar to the films. And check out my article on the surprising similarities between the films and the books, Déjá vu Mr. Bond, soon to be updated with Skyfall.

  1. I suppose there's only so many ways you can have a silhouette of a guy with a gun!

  3. I love those Charter paperbacks! Those are the editions that were on shelves when I was building up my Fleming collection in middle-school. When I see the books in my mind, those are the ones I see.

I don't mind the "Skyfall" one-sheet, but I miss the poster designs of decades past. Modern ones tend to be WAY too simplistic.

  4. Yes, the bright colors and simple paperbacks were the books when I was first reading Bond in the mid 1980s as well. The recent posters have been middle of the road. I liked Casino Royale poker table one, but most of the Brosnan main posters were a hot mess. The teaser posters ironicaly have been better than the official ones of late.

    1. Agreed.

That's a problem with movie posters in general over the past couple of decades. There's just no art to them anymore, at least in most cases. It's a real shame.
