CONFIRMED: New Gardner paperbacks to include Licence To Kill and GoldenEye
Great news! Ian Fleming Publications has confirmed that the Orion paperback reprints of the John Gardner James Bond novels will include his two novelizations, Licence To Kill (1989) and GoldenEye (1995).

I'm glad that all of Gardner will be in print, including these curiosities. (Though I'd rather see the Wood novelizations back in print!) But I've always wondered if Gardner actually WROTE the GoldenEye novelization. It doesn't read like his other books at all. The style is awfully sloppy, which, granted, could be the result of just being rushed. He complained bitterly about the experience of writing LTK, and I was surprised he agreed to do another novelization after that under presumably the same circumstances. But beyond feeling sloppy and rushed, there are also scenes that just seem odd. Take the sex scene. It's not particularly lurid by most standards, but compared to Gardner's other sex scenes it's almost pornographic. And not in an artful way. It really just doesn't read like his other books. Then again, Cold (Fall) is also kind of sloppy, and he definitely seems bored stiff of the character by that point, so maybe GE is just another example of his dwindling interest in 007...
ReplyDeleteInteresting observations, Tanner. I have to admit I've never read GoldenEye. I'm not a fan of novelizations so I put it off, and I just never came back to it. But now that you say this, I'm curious to read it.
