No new Bond novel the works

Here's a rather sobering article from The Bookseller about the future of the literary Bond.

While it isn't a surprise that Faulks will not be doing a second Bond novel, it is surprising (and disappointing) to learn IFP doesn't have "any firm plans" for a new Bond novel. I was hoping they had something in the works that we'd learn about this year.

  1. I wonder who would want the job seriously. Notice the Bond authors who don't get bad mouthed from the Hardcore "fan" community. Higson, whose books were great but who wrote about "Young" James Bond and Samantha Weinberg whose main subject was Miss Moneypenny. Neither really wrote continuation novels so you can't say they followed Fleming if they had much of the fan community would tear them apart as well. And I believe the only thing that keeps Colonel Sun from getting the same treatment is it's 40+ years old and the only Bond book that was written for 13 years or it to would get bashed to bits like the rest.

I hope there are more adult James Bond books and I believe of course there will be but no matter who writes it or what the quality of the book is as soon as 3 pages of it are presented to the public you know that most of the James Bond internet "fan" community. I lurk on message boards like CBN which is one of the sanest JB boards but is still full of many people who hate everything that isn't written by Ian Fleming or star Sean Connery.

There are two things in life I can guarantee besides death and taxes. When the time comes for a new actor to play James Bond most of the same people who love Daniel Craig now (rightfully so) will hate him then and the Next person to write a James Bond novel will be vilified and so will his/her book.

    Sorry for the long post.
